In 2015, DanseSport Québec launched its dancesport promotion and education program. Its aim was to raise awareness of this activity and to increase young people’s interest in a sport that is in a class of its own. This program, called “So … WE DANCE?”, is structured in a fun way and helps youngsters understand what Latin and Standard dancing is all about.
“So… WE DANCE?” is an awareness-raising initiative for dancesport set up by DanseSport Québec, which engages and raises the enthusiasm of young people, aged 5 to 15, who take part in it, and of all the parties involved in the program either directly or indirectly!!!
Curriculum
Essentially, “So… WE DANCE?” is structured in a fun, flexible way that can be adapted to suit groups of young people in different environments. This may be at school, in a youth centre, for festivals or in environments suitable for children with difficulties.
Sports dance initiation day
Young people will be introduced to sports dance (music, basic movements and partner work) through one or two dance styles depending on the duration of the workshop.
During the initiation day, instructors (3) will lead workshops lasting 30 to 60 minutes in groups of 15 to 25 students according to the preference of the schools. Students’ ages can vary from 5 to 12 years old for primary and 13 to 17 years old for secondary.
Following the workshops for each group, we will bring all the students together to present them with a demonstration of an elite couple. We will also have door prizes drawn. All this according to the regulations, availability and specifications of each establishment.
The content of the presentation consists of the following sections:
- Video presentation on what sports dance is;
- Warm-up;
- Learning a choreography adapted to the level and age;
- Musical games;
- Return to calm.
Extracurricular Activities
This program helps young people develop the fundamental skills necessary to reach a basic level in the practice of dancesport.
School Curriculum
Dancesport lessons are included in the primary school system.
